New: The Cannanes – Tempus Fugit

Look, I wasn’t even a twinkle in my parents’ eye when Gough Whitlam came and went in his blaze of glory. But, like punk rock and the original Star Wars trilogy, just because I wasn’t there in the flesh doesn’t mean that it didn’t have an overwhelming affect on my upbringing. Indeed, Whitlam’s time in power is probably one of the most momentous shapings of contemporary society.

Which is why this fun little, harpischord-laden ditty from Sydney’s original janglers The Cannannes is such a wholesome and warm send-off. Gough was a legend, and will always be remembered as such, so it makes sense that a band of the same calibre of awesome created a genuinely heartwarming goodbye to the bloke. A great song, an even better man.

Video: The Cannanes-Not Camping Out

If you want absurdist realism, go read Kurt Vonnegut Jr. If you want gritty realism, go watch The Dark Knight. If you want actual realism, listen to The Cannanes. These guys have been kicking around for ages. They recently released their first material in over a decade in the form of the album ‘Howling At All Hours. The song ‘Not Camping Out’ is one of the tracks off that album, and its a nice little Sunday arvo beers tune, perfect for chilling out. The slacker, nodding off guitar combined with the dried out vocals and the name checking of Sydney’s busier streets makes for an absolutely delectable song. The video reflects that to perfection, dodgy camera work reflecting the everyday struggle and joy that comes from living in Sydney.

August Playlist

Some crazy shit has occured within the last couple of days. HSC Trials have started, I’ve coincidentally started looking for careers that accept an ATAR of an asterix, and the Big Day Out launched a pretty fucking spectacular lineup. Blur, finally! Also, DIIV, The Naked and Famous, Mudhoney, Cosmic Psychos, Toro Y Moi, and Dillon Francis, with DZ Deathrays, Tame Impala, Flume and Peking Duk bringing the local contingent to mindblowing. Should be swell. Well for a bombastic announcement, there has to be an equally bombastic playlist, right? Fuck that sounded a lot better in my head. Anyway, here’s a bunch of shit I’ve been jamming to recently that you could enjoy. Like the BDO lineup it’s pretty diverse. You’ve got slacker-soul from Hebronix, addictive punk-pop from FIDLAR, some wub-wub from Tornado Fight, and some Tool-esque steel fuckery from France’s Oyster Reluctance. Speaking of Europe, there’s Plastic Bertrand’s classic ode to fucking with people that don’t speak French, and as always, plenty of the local Aussie contingent. TV Colours and Hayden James have especially been rubbing me the right way the past month. Anyway, enjoy the shit.
